Imperative

Imperative is a multimedia project stemming from years of artistic exploration. It brings together a wide variety of artistic passions, including poetry, generative (programmed) art, and electronic music. The title, "Imperative" stems from a style of poetry Estlin has developed over the past few years. The style has an almost programmatic feel to it, with code-like indentation and a lack of words referring to the self, like "I", "me", and "myself". Both cover art and music visualizer were another creative endeavor, being coded using an open-source programming framework called "Processing". The code base spans over 600 lines of code, and no re-run of the program looks quite the same as it uses randomness in much of its execution. Imperative aims to bring together the mechanical and the natural, using technology to create a mixture of artificial and organic.

Poetry

off-white

you're neutral:

dead, with

faded tips

and eggshell petals:

spider-webbed with time.

frail and hardened

are your

hands.

a bouquet of fingers.

a tactile flowering.

a halted extension.

let go of sensing in

this world.

rain

you're neutral:

dead, with

faded tips

and eggshell petals:

spider-webbed with time.

frail and hardened

are your

hands.

a bouquet of fingers.

a tactile flowering.

a halted extension.

let go of sensing in

this world.

kingfisher

seek out the minutes
in the sky:
bleached and dyed
pink.

a sunset, setting
on her head
like halo's
doubling up:
smoothen the gradient.

fly by the kingfisher:
find a nest
and land on
powerlines,
undisturbed.

grow feathers on your face
and call to her,

blue night:
moon shadows
lengthen
until dawn.

she wakens.

cathedrals ring their
bells.
feathers:
falling like leaves
in autumn.

you are naked.

collect the feathers
and re-insert
their tips into the
pores.

leap off the tower,
try to fly.

maybe she waits.

for now

loosen the eyes and close

the world:

fall from the duct:

magnified.

quiver:

rain trickling down the

red, orange, yellow bands:

ribbons tied green, blue, and purple.

loosen the eyes,

open the gates:

see:

little churches,

white streets,

petalled houses.

here you belong,

for now.

descent

reverse the calm descent:

the specks that gently drift

past head:

as variation in the iris.

shoulders:

as movement in the joint.

heart:

as circulation in the blood.

stomach:

as composition in the acid.

hips:

as inspiration in the organ.

knees:

as strength in the bone.

feet:

as motion in the digits.

reach ground as dust:

unreversed.
